JULY BUS TRIP : Thimble Islands, Luncheon at
U.S.S. Chowder Pot/Shop at Stew Leonard’s

In response to the many requests for a re-visit of one of our most popular trips, The Thimble Islands, we have scheduled this one day holiday favorite for the perfect time of the year-July!

Board the Volsunga IV for a narrated tour of the Islands and take a voyage back in time. Located just off the shoreline town of Stony Creek, “The Thimbles” have often been described as “a piece of the Maine coast that drifted into Long Island Sound and came to rest.” Hundreds of rocks in a 3 mile radius of shore make up the island chain. You’ll be able to view over 85 gorgeous homes, mostly from the Victorian era, complete with gingerbread trim, widow walks and tasteful gazebos that decorate the stony islets. According to legend, Capt. Kidd was a frequent visitor and may have left some of his booty here!

A delicious lunch awaits you at the famous U.S.S. Chowder Pot III-a Bradford eatery voted Best Seafood for 5 years running! Choose your entrée at registration which begins Friday, June 18th. A check for $81.00, all inclusive, payable to McCarney Tours is due at registration. We will have a stop at the fabulous Stew Leonard’s on the way home – be prepared-you may bring a freezer chest and we will store it in the bay of the bus!

Date: Monday, July 19th
Time: 8:30am—7:30pm

Film Festival: Shutter Island

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese, this psychological mystery-thriller film is based on a 2003 novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane.

Set in 1954, U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) visit the Ashecliff Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island. They are investigating the disappearance of a patient who vanished from a locked room.

Dr. John Crawley (Ben Kingsley), the head psychiatrist, explains that Rachel was institutionalized after drowning her three children, but is under the delusion that she is still home and her children are still alive. The cliffs surrounding the perimeter make it impossible for Rachel to have reached the nearby caves.

Book Discussion: The Commoner

John Burnham Schwartz has written a sensitive and compelling novel, spanning several generations, about life in the palace of the Chrysanthemum Throne. Based on the story of the love between the Crown Prince and a well educated young woman from a highly-regarded commoner family, he has constructed the private story of their life together.

It is 1959 when Haruko marries the Crown Prince, becoming the first non-aristocratic woman to enter the mysterious and longest running monarchy in the world. Her family reluctantly agreed to the marriage, and watched as their daughter became an isolated player in an austere life of ritual and duty. Her primary responsibility is to provide a son and heir to the throne. Refreshments will be served, compliments of The Friends. Edna Ritzenberg will moderate. Copies of the book are available at the Circulation Desk.

Date: Friday, June 18th
Time: 1:30pm
