BRING THE ENTIRE FAMILY!! PICNIC SUPPERS ENCOURAGED! WARM WEATHER MINI-VACATIONS
August Trip: North Fork Wineries, Cooperage Inn and Briermere Farm Enjoy a picturesque day out on the North Fork of L.I. in the heart of wine country! Begin at the lovely Martha Clara Vineyards, formerly the Entenmann Family Farm. The winery is still home to thoroughbred horses, three teams of Percherons, a team of Clydesdales, emus, alpacas, pygmy goats, peacocks, miniature donkeys and sheep, llamas and more although converted into a new family business. Enjoy a tour and tasting at Vineyard 48 , known for producing wines of uncompromising quality from some of the oldest vines on the Fork. Don’t forget to check out their Little Cigar Factory - maker of premium cigars. Lunch at the Cooperage Inn is sure to delight you, before we travel on to a local farmstand to purchase the freshest of produce in addition to the always popular stop at Briermere Farm, famous for some of the island’s most delicious pies!
September Trip: Penn Dutch County-Lancaster, Pennsylvania Visit Amish Country-a land and culture frozen in time. A step-on guide will take you through the area’s farms, windmills, covered bridges and horse-drawn carriages that have seen little change since the Amish settled here 300 years ago. This tightknit group believes in hard work, simplicity, no electricity and a Biblical life free of material and commercial goods. Many families own farms and work together on their land-others work in local retail with little contact with outside life.

Date: Wednesday, July 21st Book Discussions Friday, July 16th: The Glass Room by Simon Mawer is a novel of architecture, art and love that was long-listed for this year’s Man Booker Prize for fiction. The home at the heart of the novel is the opposite of primitive. The architect wishes to “take Man out of the cave and float him in the air.” His ambition, he announces, is to build a house of glass. Set in Czechoslovakia, the novel explores peoples’ hopes and aspirations in a moving read. Mira Sennett moderates. Friday, August 20th: Little Bee by Chris Cleave is a novel about a character you will never forget. From the opening passage, readers will be hooked: “Most days I wish I was a British pound coin instead of an African girl. Everyone would be pleased to see me coming.” Prose and humor lighten the book’s dark and haunting mood in this novel framed by politics, but about people-an intense, satisfying read. Linda Judenberg moderates. Refreshments served, compliments of The Friends
